Vienna hides a 3,400-year-old book from another world

Everyone who has been to Vienna has seen Schönbrunn Palace, Vienna Ferris Wheel, Time Travel Vienna, Vienna Philharmonic Concert, Naschmarkt, Danube Tower & Danube Park, Schönbrunn Zoo, Museum of Illusions and more.

However, the former imperial capital has something else to show you that we recommend you see.

It is about the Papyrus Museum.

The Vienna Papyrus Museum is located in the Neue Burg at Heldenplatz, 1010 Vienna1.

The museum offers around 300 fascinating exhibits from the papyrus department as permanent exhibitions and special exhibitions.

The entrance is in the middle of the curved part of the building and the museum is on the lower floor.

The oldest object in the Papyrus Museum in Vienna is the Sesostris Book of the Dead, which is 3,400 years old.

The Book of the Dead of Sesostris is one of the most famous books of the dead in Egypt.

It was written on papyrus and contained prayers and incantations that were used in ancient Egypt to help the dead pass successfully into the afterlife.

To get to Papyrus Museum Neue Burg from Vienna train station, you can take the subway U2 line to Museumsquartier station which is the closest station to Neue Burg.

From there, you can walk to the Neue Burg wing of the Hofburg Palace where the Papyrus Museum is located.

The Papyrus Museum has a globally important collection of valuable papyrus dating back up to 3,000 years.

The collection contains documents from three millennia which have been preserved and are not only useful for research but can also be admired by visitors from all over the world.

The museum also contains several objects that are not made of papyrus. For example, small collections of mummy labels and stelae (essentially tombstones).
The Papyrus Museum is located in the Neue Burg wing of the Hofburg Palace.

You buy a ticket directly from the service counter at the entrance of the library.

At the time of writing, an adult ticket costs €5. The Vienna Pass ( review ) gives you one-time free entry.

As the museum shares space inside the library, many of the latter’s facilities are at your disposal. For example, right in the entrance there is a seating area with vending machines for drinks and snacks.
