Russian President Vladimir Putin has described the legal proceedings against former US President Donald Trump as „politically motivated persecution“, reported AFP.

The Kremlin, which is believed to be on friendly terms with Trump, has repeatedly spoken out in defense of the former president, who faces a string of election meddling charges.

„As for the persecution of Trump, for us, in the current environment, it is good because it shows the rottenness of the American system,“ Putin said at an economic forum in the Far East.

„This is a politically motivated pursuit of one’s competitor,“ he added.

Putin, who served in the Soviet security services, added: „And this shows who we are fighting against… As they used to say in Soviet times: ‘the beastly face of American capitalism.’

Relations between Washington and Moscow, strained by a number of issues under Putin, have hit new lows since the Kremlin launched a large-scale military operation in Ukraine.

Putin noted that he does not expect a change in the foreign policy position of the United States towards Russia, regardless of „who will be elected president“ next year.

He accused Washington of stoking anti-Russian sentiment among ordinary Americans.

„The current authorities have directed American society in an anti-Russian spirit,“ the Russian leader said. „They did, and now somehow turning that ship the other way is going to be very difficult.“
