This morning, we honored Officer Flerida Renteria of our Town of Cutler Bay and Officer Mario Fernandez of our Agricultural & Environmental Crimes Section at the First Annual First Responders Recognition event hosted by the South Dade Chamber of Commerce. It was a heartwarming time filled with inspiring stories and well-deserved honors. Together, we celebrated the selfless service of those who go above and beyond for our community.

Police Officer Edward Young was killed in an automobile crash at 3:00 am while he and his partner responded to backup officers from the Miami Police Department who were attempting to apprehend robbery suspects.
During the response the patrol car blew out the right front tire, causing it to go out of control and strike a utility pole in front of Dadeland Plaza and 9465 South Dixie Highway.
Two months prior to the accident Officer Young and his partner were awarded Officer of the Month for their outstanding police work.
Officer Young was survived by his wife and mother.

Autistic child wanted in Miami

Miami police are searching for a 14-year-old boy with autism.

He went missing on September 9.

The child is 5.9 feet tall.

His name is Jose Bolanos.

Miami police have released surveillance video showing the last time Jose Bolanos, 14, was seen on Friday.

The boy has disappeared from his home.

Downloading footage from the cameras.

One of them shows Jose wearing a blue T-shirt.

We want him back, we will not punish him, his mother is very sad and worried. We love him very much, his father pointed out.

Anyone who sees him is urged to call the police immediately.

RECOVERED: We are happy to say that we have located Jose Bolaños, in good health, after receiving a tip. He was at Brickell City Center Apple Store when a manager told us that he was still in the store. We located him and recovered him. Thanks to all who helped in his search!

The boy had gone missing on September 9 and was being searched for.

The quick work of the policemen led to a good result.

Zoo Miami is a favorite for kids and adults alike.

Many people don’t realize that this is a small town.

There, the inhabitants cannot communicate with words.

You need to know the language of animals to understand what they need.

Especially when they are sick.

Here’s an incident from yesterday:

Yesterday, an 8-month-old male giraffe named, „Turtle,“ underwent surgery to remove a bone fragment in his right rear leg. The fragment was most likely the result of a previous unknown trauma leading to pain in the joint and an abnormal gait. Because the altered gait could lead to more severe issues resulting in a life-threatening situation, it was imperative that the bone fragment be surgically removed to relieve the pain and hopefully restore a normal gait.
Equine veterinary specialist, Dr. Alexander Daniel, along with his team consisting of veterinarian Dr. Sarah Gracida, veterinary technicians, Carson Gavalline and Gabrielle Ruiz, and veterinary student, Triston Lackey, volunteered their time to perform this very special surgery.

They were assisted by Zoo Miami’s veterinarians Dr. Rodney Schnellbacher, Dr. Marisa Bezjian, Dr. Gaby Flacke and Dr. Gwen Myers, along with the zoo’s Animal Health team.

Although still considered a juvenile, this young giraffe weighs more than 500 pounds and stands close to 10 feet tall. It took a team of over a dozen people working together to successfully immobilize, transport, and monitor the giraffe during a procedure that took a total of just over 2 hours.

While immobilized, the giraffe received a series of radiographs to help determine the best surgical approach while also having a routine blood draw. Following the removal of the bone fragment, the joint was infused with hydrogel and stem cells to promote healing. In addition, Turtle received laser therapy, acupuncture therapy, and massage therapy, all designed to make the healing process more comfortable in the following days.

As of this writing, Turtle is up and walking normally, giving every indication that the surgery was a success! He will remain off-exhibit for the next few days so he can be carefully monitored to help ensure that the positive progress continues!

One of the emblems of the city has died.

Over the last two days, Toki started exhibiting serious signs of discomfort, which her full Miami Seaquarium and Friends of Toki medical team began treating immediately and aggressively. Despite receiving the best possible medical care, she passed away Friday afternoon from what is believed to be a renal condition. Toki was an inspiration to all who had the fortune to hear her story and especially to the Lummi nation that considered her family. Those of us who have had the honor and privilege to spend time with her will forever remember her beautiful spirit.

MDPD Remembers Fallen Officer Cesar „Echy“ Echavery EOW 8/17/2022 #NeverForget
Police Officer Echy Echavery succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained two nights earlier near the intersection of NW 62nd Street and NW 7th Avenue while chasing a robbery suspect at 8:50 pm.
A vehicle that had been involved in an armed robbery in Dania Beach earlier in the evening was observed driving in Miami-Dade and fled when officers attempted to stop it. Officers pursued the vehicle until it crashed into a light pole. The driver exited the vehicle and fled on foot as Officer Echavery and other officers pursued him on foot. The man opened fire, striking Officer Echavery before he was killed by return fire.
Officer Echavery was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital where he succumbed to his wounds the following evening.

A second suspect in the initial robbery was shot and killed the following day as a SWAT team attempted to take him into custody at a local hotel.

Officer Echavery had served with the Miami-Dade Police Department for five years and was assigned to the Robbery Intervention Detail.
