Zoo Miami is a great place.

The thousands of animal species are incredible there, as well as the people who take care of them.

The zoo showed exceptional care for a sea turtle.

Specialists want to save the turtle’s life.

On Friday, May 12th, a loggerhead sea turtle that is currently receiving care at Zoo Miami’s Sea Turtle Hospital, was transported to Advanced Veterinary Care Specialists in Davie, FL, to receive a computed tomography (CT) scan.

Here’s what the zoo said.

The transport and care was managed by Zoo Miami Associate Veterinarian, Dr. Marisa Bezjian, assisted by Animal Health Specialist, Julie Heyde.

Veterinary Internist, Dr. Luis Macho, performed the scan and donated his time, staff and facilities to Zoo Miami in support of the care of this endangered turtle.

The turtle was brought to Zoo Miami on April 27th after being found tangled in a buoy line at the Deering Estate.

It was suffering from several tumors caused by the fibropapilloma virus. This virus has been documented in all species of sea turtles but rarely in loggerheads.

The severity of the tumors can range from mild, causing small external tumors, to severe, causing massive external tumors that can result in blindness and other debilitating factors, as well as internal tumors on vital organs that usually lead to death. Although we know it is caused by a type of Herpes virus, it is not known why it has become so prevalent over the last several decades. There have been several studies that indicate it may be linked to pollution and climate change.
This particular individual is a sub-adult, estimated to be between 15-20 years old, and weighing just over 100 pounds. Its gender is unknown at this time as it is very difficult to determine the sex of sub-adult sea turtles.
Initial results of the CT scan indicate that the tumors may have spread to internal organs which could result in a very grim prognosis for this turtle. The Animal Health Team will evaluate the detailed results of all tests to discuss what will be the best course of action moving forward.

Sea turtles are reptiles that live in the warm marine waters of tropical oceans. They are among the oldest animals on the planet and have been around since the age of the dinosaurs. There are seven species of sea turtles that differ in size, shape and diet.

The lives of sea turtles are difficult and fraught with danger.

They are threatened by habitat loss, pollution, poaching, fishing, climate change and disease. According to various sources, the life expectancy of sea turtles ranges from 30 to 100 years, but their exact age is difficult to measure. Many sea turtles die as babies or young animals due to predators and other factors. Only one in a thousand baby turtles make it to adulthood.

Zoo Miami is one of the largest and most diverse zoos in the United States. It is located south of Miami and occupies an area of 750 acres. The zoo is home to over 3,000 animals from more than 500 species, including many rare and endangered species.
The zoo is divided into four themed areas: Asia, Africa, the Amazon and beyond, and Australia.

Zoo Miami offers many fun and educational activities for visitors, such as animal feeding, a petting zoo, a monorail, a tram, and a carousel. The zoo is open daily from 10:00 to 17:00, with the last tickets sold at 16:00.
The price of the ticket for adults is 22 dollars, and for children from 3 to 12 years it is 21 dollars.
