„Baltata“ nature reserve – the northernmost longose forest in Europe, attracts more and more tourists from Bulgaria and the world. Located next to the Bulgarian Black Sea resort „Albena“, and along the lower course of the Batova River, it shelters over 260 species of plants, from which 28 protected.

The compact territory of nearly 200 hectares is surrounded by a protected area „Blatno kokiche“, which plays the role of a kind of buffer zone through which one can touch the beauty and tranquility of the ancient forest, while the heart of the reserve remains inaccessible and reserved for its wild residents.

In the northern part of Albena, a marked eco-path starts, passing through several information points and exiting in close proximity to the beach.

It is a favorite place for walking, jogging, cycling or simply escaping from the hot sunny days, and six of the hotels in the complex offer accommodation with a direct view of the natural wealth. „Many tourists from Western Europe are already booking a vacation here precisely because of Balta, because they can combine a vacation on the sunny beach with time for bird watching, practicing yoga, or exploring rare plants,“ the holiday village says.

„The reserve has been declared to preserve the natural riparian forest, in which Polish ash, Polish elm and black alder can be found in the conditions of periodic flooding at high water levels of the river. A feeling of mysticism is created by the five types of tree-like lianas, which, following the light in the crowns, wrap the trunks of the trees.

The habitats of more than 140 species of rare and protected plants and animals are protected in the reserve, including the marsh snowdrop, the wagtail, the wagtail, the woodpecker, the black woodpecker, the otter, etc.

For us, ecologists, protected areas like this one play an important role in the protection of biodiversity, especially when there is attitude and care towards them,“ says Petko Tsvetkov, an ecologist from the Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation.

He adds that the area is one of the most active refers to the seasonal migration of birds, as it falls within the famous migration route Via Pontica. In summer, many cormorants, white and sometimes black storks, rusty herons, mallards, woodpeckers can be seen here. The reserve also has a family of nutria, who are used to the presence of people and regularly interact with them, receiving food in return.

At its easternmost point, near the mouth of the river, the reserve touches the sea, forming beautifully rolling sand dunes, a preferred place for solitude and communion with nature.
