Oceanologist indicated what are the chances of saving the people in the submarine „Titan“
Engineer Dr. Iliya Shtirkov from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences – Institute of Oceanology is not optimistic about the lives of the tourists from the searched submarine that was going to the Titanic wreckage.
„Whether there is a chance that they will be saved, it is difficult for me to say, but I must say that the chance is minimal, since the submarine has not yet been located. And after it is located, a complicated operation to remove it begins, since apparently it cannot float on its own,“ Shtirkov told Nova TV.
„A plane is looking for the pilot house, as it cannot communicate with the people in it. There can be several reasons why it cannot communicate. For example, if there’s a problem in the energy base that’s in the battery, if there’s some giant short circuit inside, or there’s a fire, which is also possible. This destroys the possibility of using an ultrasonic connection, with which they usually make a radio connection,“ added Eng. Shtirkov.

„It’s eternally cold there and the water temperature doesn’t change. As for food and oxygen, every submarine has a so-called emergency reserve.
So, in addition to oxygen, it must also have a special chemical that absorbs carbon monoxide. It’s the same resource as oxygen, usually one resource runs out sooner, so we don’t know if they’ll die from lack of oxygen or carbon monoxide poisoning. But keep in mind that seven percent carbon monoxide in the air is deadly,“ added Iliya Shtirkov.
Contact with the submersible, called Titan, was lost on Sunday while it was about 700km south of St John’s
Underwater noises have been detected from the search area for the missing bathyscaphe near the Titanic’s sinking site, while the people on board are facing a dwindling supply of oxygen, DPA and Agence France-Presse reported, citing BTA and Nova.
Contact with the submersible, called the Titan, was lost on Sunday while it was about 700km south of St John’s on the Canadian island of Newfoundland, while sailing to the wreck site.
On board the „Titan“ there are five people, including the British billionaire and adventurer Hamish Harding. Yesterday, the US Coast Guard estimated that the 20-foot-long bathyscaphe had only 40 hours of oxygen left. Besides him, on board are the Pakistani Shahzada Dawood, his son Suleiman and Stockton Rush, CEO and founder of the company „Ocean Gate“, which organized the expedition. They are accompanied by French submariner Paul-Henri Narjolet.
