Sir!

Be safe out there, Breaches.

The dog broke his elbow while on duty.

He developed painful arthritis.

He was given synovial fluid therapy and Breacher’s condition improved.

Breacher was put under general anesthesia because the procedure was painful.

The Miami Police Department has a K9 unit that is part of the Field Operations Division’s Special Operations.

This unit provides its highly specialized canine teams to protect the citizens and visitors of Miami 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Canine teams specialize in interior and exterior searches, evidence searches, narcotics and explosive device and detection, and any situation that requires physical security capabilities that will increase officer safety.

All dogs are initially trained for basic field work. Then depending on the character of the dog, it is trained for either drug detection or explosive device detection.

The Miami-Dade Schools Police Department (MDSPD) has a K9 that was established in 1995. This unit is comprised of four canine officers and their highly trained Belgian Malinois and German Shepherd partners. These highly intelligent dogs are trained in the areas of apprehension, drug detection and explosive device detection. The Canine Unit provides support to its agency and provides assistance to all other law enforcement agencies upon request.

An exact number of canine teams in the Miami Police Department cannot be found, but it can be assumed that there are more than four.
