It’s not the tallest flagpole in the US, but it’s the most beautiful
She’s not the tallest, biggest, or oldest… but she is the most beautiful. Relocated Clinton Walls flag pole here at the farm so ol’ Glory can fly unrestricted, in plain view in high honor. 💯USA 💪🏽 this Memorial Weekend
This is what David Mittenen writes on Facebook.
He has also released pictures, but it is not very clear where this beautiful flag is.
The plan to build the tallest pylon in the world, on top of which the American flag will fly, is dividing the residents of a town in the US state of Maine, rather than uniting them, the Associated Press reported.
Lobster boat engines rumble in the quiet bays. Lumberjacks sneak deep into the forest. Farmers tend to fields of wild blueberries. The idyllic location in the US state of Maine is one of the last on the East Coast untouched by modern times. This makes it a remarkable backdrop for one family’s bold vision for the region, a pylon rising from the woods into the vast sky to be the tallest in the world, surpassing the Empire State Building. And on top of it fly a huge American flag, bigger than a football field, that can be seen for miles on a clear day.
The $1 billion project, funded in part by donations, will unite people of all political persuasions and remind them of shared values in an era of national division, according to promoters. So far, however, the project, dubbed the Freedom Park Pillar, has achieved just the opposite. In Columbia Falls, population 485, the location closest to the patch of land where the pylon will rise, the debate reveals societal and cultural contentious issues.
Does the quiet area want the visitors the pylon will attract? Will the large-scale venture change the landscape? How will a balance be achieved between development and ecology? How will traditional industries fare with service jobs? And perhaps most important of all: how does an American city demonstrate its love of country at a time when even the flag itself is politicized?
The pylon itself is a bold enough proposition. It will be 445 meters tall, surpassing the Empire State Building, and will have elevators that will take people to observation decks where, on a clear day, they will be able to see Canada.
It’s like putting the Eiffel Tower in the Maine desert, says a local resident.
This is far from all. The site is expected to become an imposing patriotic theme park, with living history museums, restaurants, plaques with 24 million names, gondolas transporting visitors. Many Columbia Falls residents are dumbfounded by the scale. The site will require paving in the woods for parking lots and housing for hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of workers, which could turn this oasis into a sprawling area of souvenir shops, fast-food restaurants and malls.
From above, one can see extensive greenery here. Beneath it lie hundreds of streams, lakes and ponds that breed trout and valuable populations of Atlantic salmon. Deer, moose, black bears, and beavers walk through the forest massifs. The forests are interspersed with wild blueberry bushes.
This is the last wild nature on the East Coast, says local resident Marie Emerson, quoted by BTA.
According to her, it is the rugged coastline and pristine wilderness that make this corner of the world special. However, a large-scale development can destroy the forests and blueberry bushes that have been here for 10,000 years, with the first farmers being the Native Americans.
