Russians traveling to Mexico are massively stopped in Istanbul, from where they transfer, by security officials.

The reason is the insistence of the Mexican border authorities because of the frequent attempts of Russians to illegally cross the border with the USA.

St. Petersburg resident Gleb spent almost half a million rubles on his dream trip. But the road to Madonna’s concert in Mexico ended at the airport in Istanbul: security officers hired by Turkish Airlines refused to let him board the flight to Cancun at the gate. On April 21, a VKontakte community dedicated to the singer Madonna shared the story of a lost dream.

A fan of the pop diva, the resident of St. Petersburg Gleb planned to attend one of the concerts of the Mexican tour and bought a ticket for a Turkish Airlines flight to Cancun with a transfer at the airport in Istanbul.

The first flight on April 19 went as planned, but he was denied boarding on the second flight. The traveler was first sent to a separate counter with the words:

„Oh, another Russian.“

Then an employee with a Gozen Security badge told the St. Petersburg resident he wasn’t flying anywhere and scratched out his boarding pass.

As Gleb told Fontanka, the events took place in the transit area of the Istanbul airport, where people on their way to a transfer ended up right at the gate from which the plane was supposed to fly to Mexico.

According to him, several other Russians were brought down with him, referring in particular to a brief history of the trip.

As a result, the Madonna fan had to buy a return ticket to St. Petersburg with his own money.

In total, he lost about 430 thousand rubles due to the burned plane tickets, paid hotel reservations and concert tickets.

„For this amount, I received passport discrimination, a spoiled mood, and the worst thing is that I will never fulfill my old dream of seeing Madonna and attending her concert,“ he summarizes.

After arriving home, Gleb wrote a complaint to Turkish Airlines, but has not yet received a response, he told Fontanka.

Victor, who planned to fly on the same plane to Cancun as Gleb, told Fontanka that he and his daughter had also been removed from the flight.

There is no clear explanation of the reasons for the removal from the flight.

At the same time, security officials said that all complaints should be addressed to the airline itself.

Turkish Airlines, in turn, said they were not the ones to cancel the flight, so they would not refund tickets, including a round-trip Istanbul-Moscow ticket, the passenger said.

The example of Turkish Airlines refusing to allow Russians to board flights to South and Latin America is not an isolated example, as is clear from discussions on travel forums and thematic chats on Telegram. The situation first became known in March 2024.

Those traveling to Argentina, Brazil and Mexico are removed. As a rule, problems arise for those who do not have a round-trip ticket and carry a minimum amount of luggage.

There are already over 1,300 participants in the chat of those affected by this Turkish airline policy, and there is discussion of filing a class action complaint against the carrier’s actions.

According to the Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR), the airline has de facto delegated the right to admit passengers on its flights to the private outsourcing structure Gozen Security.

In response to a query from tour operators, Turkish Airlines explained that „due to an insufficient set of documents“ it „proactively checks all documents of tourists before departure to a certain country“.

And she may not allow the passenger to board because the airline, she said, „suffers financial costs, including fines“ if he is „found to have improper documents“ at the border and is deported.

At the same time, the carrier did not specify what exactly the tourists who were taken off the flight were missing. In addition, passengers of other airlines do not face a similar situation, notes ATOR, advising tourists to plan alternative routes.

Russian diplomats are already baffled by the problem. The American hotel brand Nobu Hospitality, whose co-owner is the world-famous actor Robert De Niro, is entering Bulgaria, with two sites – in Sofia and Varna. This news caused a lot of interest, but where in the seaside city the site of Robert De Niro will be, was never mentioned.

According to information, both locations in Bulgaria of the Nobu Hospitality brand will be positioned in the ownership of BSPF Bulgaria, part of the offshore company Black Sea Property and the local hotel operator GHV-Dolphins.

Thanks to Google Street View, users have the opportunity to explore
most Bulgarian cities, but the infrastructure not only in populated areas, but also
between them changes and evolves, so Google aims for images to
update regularly. The new images will help users to
orient themselves even better when planning their trips. Street View shows
360-degree images not only of streets, but also of natural, cultural and
historical sites as well as walking routes and is a valuable tool
both for tourism and education and for business.
For the first time, cars photographed the Bulgarian cities in 2012 and since then
regularly update the staff. Photos from previous shoots also available for

During the current archeological season, in two stages – in the months of September and November 2023, a diving team led by the deputy director of the National History Museum of Bulgaria, Prof. Dr. Ivan Hristov, conducted underwater searches north of the mouth of the river. It weighs 5.35 kg and according to laboratory tests carried out at NIM, it contains 98% pure tin. Black Sea ingot was prepared for delivery to some workshop on land for making bronze objects or coins.

Another extremely rare object attracting the attention of archaeologists is a ritual vessel made of stone, called by the ancient Greeks a periranterium (περιρραντήριον). A periranterium (περι + ῥαίνειν) was an ancient Greek vessel used in pagan cults as a reservoir for holy water. It is made of cut stone, marble and less often of baked clay. It was found in various sanctuaries. The object is the first of its kind to come under water along our Black Sea coast.

It is also extremely rare on land.

Whether the stone object fell near the mouth of the Kamchia River from a sunken ship or was in place within the confines of a seaside sanctuary remains a mystery. But it is no accident that divers discovered half a stone stock deliberately cut as a gift to a shrine by traveling sailors.

During underwater research, whole and fragmented amphorae, as well as iron anchors from different historical periods, were found. An important find is the location of the remains of a sunken ship from the Ottoman period.

An excellently preserved wooden keel lies from it on the seabed. Divers recovered two cannons and fragments of pottery.

The ship sank probably in bad weather, seeking protection in the small bay of Cape Ilandjik. It is believed to have crashed on shallow sea reefs that are hard to see in a storm.

The project is related to conducting not only underwater searches, but also geophysical research between the mouth of the Kamchia River and Cape Paletsa, led by Eng. Kiril Velkovski, an associate of the Center for Underwater Archeology in Sozopol (CPA). Using a side-scanning sonar and a multibeam echo sounder, the borders of a seemingly disappeared mysterious island near the very mouth of the Kamchia River have been located.

From the data obtained, it can be concluded that the reef may have supported an island in the past, which most likely eroded.

This island was marked on numerous Western European maps in the period 1452-1750.

In a large part of the maps of this period, the images of islands that do not exist today or have smaller areas than those mapped then make an impression. Specialists from the Institute of Oceanology in the city of Varna share that a drop in sea level was observed during the Middle Ages.

This is the Korsun regression, named after the medieval city of Korsun (ancient Chersonesos, today’s Sevastopol in Ukraine).

Obviously during this period the coastline was different from today and it is quite expected that there would have been smaller or larger islands that were of importance to medieval navigators (places to shelter from strong winds, reef hazards, etc.). This is probably the case with the island in front of the mouth of Kamchia, called by the local fishermen the „Kamchia Stone“. The island is a reef with a slightly elongated shape in the north-south direction, with a width of approximately 520 m and a length of 870 m.

Scientific consultants for the research are Dr. Dragomir Garbov (Federal Ministry of Climate Change, Environment, Energy and Water Canberra, Australia) and Associate Professor Krum Bachvarov (University of Connecticut, Department of Anthropology). The team also includes: Todor Dimitrov – diver and photographer of the NIM, Eng. Totyo Angelov – cartographer and surveyor, Tencho Tenev – Manager of the Municipal Diving Center – Sozopol, Radostin Penev (CPA), professional divers and friends of the museum.

Specialists from the National History Museum point out that the water area between Cape Black and Cape Galata near the city of Varna is among the least explored underwater areas of the northern Bulgarian Black Sea. At the suggestion of the director of the CPA, Dr. Nayden Prahov, he began targeted research in this water area.

The famous Sycamore Gap tree, located in a natural depression in the landscape along Hadrian’s Wall in northern England, may have been „deliberately felled“ overnight, Northumberland National Park Authority said on Thursday, Dnevnik reported.

A 16-year-old teenager is believed to have cut down the iconic tree from the movie Robin Hood: Prince of Robbers.

The landmark, which the national park claims is its most photographed location, is also known as „Robin Hood’s Tree“ after it featured in the 1991 film Robin Hood: Prince of Robbers, and in 2016 .was voted English Tree of the Year.

Here’s what park director Tony Gates said:

„We are still coming to terms with the loss of the tree at Sycamore Gap and are deeply touched by all the messages and support we have received.

The tree meant so much, of course people want to know what comes next. Right now we are focused on making the place safe and supporting the staff and the community.

We will work with the National Trust and other partners to look at options and make plans for the tree’s location,“ he said.

Something symbolic to state that no matter what life throws at you, however harsh, cruel and plain unfair, you can survive and grow again. It would protect the stump from anyone messing with it in the future and give the shoots a chance to grow undisturbed. Just an idea.

Hopefully the felled tree can be made into something in order to preserve the historic past. I’d like to see a go fund me created. One tree felled, hundreds more planted across Northumberland and of course a new tree or sculpture at Sycamore Gap.

Hopefully the stump will regrow, and the tree can be used for something purposeful which can be enjoyed. It would be wonderful if people could donate a small amount to some kind of memorial fund which could then be used to plant many, many, more trees, what a legacy that would be for such an icon of the county x

Personally absolutely shocked and upset by this tragic loss of the tree. Great to hear that there is a chance of a coppice being an option, however! I wonder if to restore and preserve the landscape could we think about a Tree of the North statue of the tree until our tree gets the chance to recover?

Get one of our wonderful local woodcarvers to turn the felled trunk into a bench where people can rest and reflect. Eventually the old stump will have new growth.

I’m not convinced a 16 year old has done this alone. Too professional, he’d have to drive there with no license.

Thank you for the update. The loss of the tree is heartbreaking. I have lived and walked nearby all my life and this feels like losing part of my home, as well as being an attack on the wild and beautiful places. I really like the ‘Guardian of the Gap’ idea which someone posted above. It seems only right to mark the tree and the place with a symbol of longevity and strength.

Customs officers stopped the smuggling of more than 700 thousand dollars through the „Captain Andreevo“ checkpoint on the border between Bulgaria and Turkey.

They are brought as defendants in two fast-track proceedings for the fact that at the border post they did not declare in writing to the customs authorities currency transferred across the country’s border and the value of the money is particularly large – BGN 1,209,800 – about 700 thousand dollars in total for both cases.

On September 26, around 8:30 p.m., a truck with Turkish registration, driven by a 40-year-old Turkish citizen, arrived at the „Captain Andreevo“ border crossing to leave the country.

The truck was traveling from Great Britain to Turkey via Bulgaria. On September 27, around 8:00 p.m., a car with Bulgarian registration arrived to leave the country for Turkey. Behind the wheel was a 23-year-old man with dual citizenship – Bulgarian and Turkish. During a check in the luggage compartment, packages of euro banknotes were found in a gas cylinder adapted for hiding. The total amount of discovered undeclared currency is 522,710 euros with the BGN equivalent of 1,022,331 BGN – 600 thousand dollars.

A mysterious stone city is frozen deep in the forests of Sredna Gora in Bulgaria.

Colossal-sized rocks scattered in bizarre clusters along the entire southern slope from Koprivshtitsa to Strelcha. Amazing structures that remember life on these lands 4000 years before Christ.

If we are traveling on the Sub-Balkan road, we stop via Koprivshtitsa towards Strelcha.

Almost immediately after conquering the saddle between the high peaks of Bunaya on the right and Bogdan on the left, we will notice dozens of those strange-looking stone colossi around the road.

We are already in the heart of the megalithic city and we are walking along one of the marked paths in the Kulata area. The area is stony, with a slope in a southern direction, but extremely picturesque in all seasons. Especially now, when late summer has already dyed the landscape yellow-orange – heralding the onset of golden autumn.

These are really huge granite rocks, piled up and shaped in a way that the imagination can hardly imagine.

Moreover, some of these canaries are set against any laws of physics.

That’s right – perfectly upright on the steep cliffs, astronomically aligned to ancient beliefs and cults. This is what the Thracian sanctuaries Kulata, Skumsale and Kachulata look like. The mighty earth forces are the main artist of this alien picture, but the Thracians, who recognized these rock phenomena as their sanctuaries, have shaped the most mysterious corners.

Along the trail, a huge oblong granite giant, protruding and visible from miles away, makes an impression. Such type of structures are called menhirs, and this one here is among the highest in Bulgaria.

This menhir is really quite tall. 5 meters and 80 centimeters.

Beds of stone, thrones, gutters, altars, pirustia. The silent granite giants know all, but their voice has died away in the silence of time. Only they remember the mysterious rituals, divination customs and sacrifices performed here by the Thracian-Odris.

Southwest of the Tower, on the right on the road to Strelcha, we go to Skumsale. Another megalithic city that impresses with the shapes and size of the stone blocks. The strange name probably comes from „kumsal“, the sandy soil of the entire southern slope under Mount Stramonos.

If one moves around, one will again see the now familiar cult fixtures, visibly hand-carved into the solid stone. The area is criss-crossed by paths between the cliffs, trodden by lovers of more extreme climbing.

In practice, no one will stop you from climbing the rocks, but it should be borne in mind that it is not so safe. This is the kind of place we are looking for – with a forward view of the surrounding stone blocks.
