Carl Lewis visiting Hristo Stoichkov in Bulgaria
Hristo Stoichkov because of his book „History“ of the legendary athlete Carl Lewis before lighting the flame of peace in the Garden of the World in Pazardzhik. Although a day late due to the canceled flight, the nine-time Olympic champion arrived in Bulgaria and took part in the impressive weekend in the city.
In the book, there was a special message from Stoichkov to Lewis, which read:
„For the King of the Olympics from the Golden Ball football“.
Stoichkov also presented Carl Lewis with a copy of his Golden Ball. When Stoichkov won football’s biggest individual prize as a Barcelona player, the famous American triumphed with two Olympic gold medals at the games in the Catalan capital.
The municipality of Pazardzhik, in the person of the mayor Todor Popov, presented Lewis with an impressive work – a painting with the Olympic rings, made of 61 gilded roses. Their number symbolizes the year the legend was born – 1961.
At the end of the day, Stoichkov and Lewis lit the eternal flame of peace in the Garden of the World. The two are his torchbearers for Europe and America. In November, Stoichkov took the torch to the Vatican to Pope Francis, who was patron of the Peace Match, in which Kamata also played.
The marathon day of the two sports legends had no end. The two listened to the symphony concert in Pazardzhik. They met with one of our most promising track and field athletes, Aleksandra Nakova, who is from the city. Emotions just refused to end by midnight. And despite the tiring journey, Lewis demonstrated excellent form – as if he is now ready to step on the track again.
On Sunday, the two participated in the „Honorary Torchbearer of Peace“ award ceremony at the Garden of the World. And then they visited the regional museum, where they met with athletes.
„It’s an honor to be involved,“ Carl Lewis said into the microphone.
„The three days in Pazardzhik filled me with so many positive emotions – commented Stoichkov. – It’s always nice to see how a city lives with sports. Carl and I promised to see each other again. Maybe next time it will be on his territory. Lewis is one of the examples that every young athlete should follow in order to succeed.”
