A mine from the war in Ukraine floats to the coast of NATO
The floating mine appeared off Kabakum beach near Varna in Bulgaria, which is a NATO member.
It was blown up by soldiers from the Bulgarian Navy.
The area was cordoned off, and a Navy ship arrived at the scene.
The alert was submitted by a citizen to the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center. On the ground, military sailors classified the mine as an anchor, „Yam“ type.
The mine was detonated a safe distance out to sea.
„Given the small distance from the coast, the mine was pulled to a safe distance into the sea and destroyed with a controlled explosion by the specialized team of the Struma mine hunter. When destroying the mine, safety measures were strictly observed,“ added the Ministry of Defense.
The people of the nearby fishing village were evacuated as a precaution.
According to Rear Adm. Kiril Mihailov, commander of the Navy, the mine is from the war in Ukraine.
The naval forces continue to maintain readiness for anti-mine actions, with the aim of ensuring safe navigation in the Bulgarian maritime spaces.
