A man changed his gender, but they don’t give him a document that he is a woman: He sleeps in front of the court
A dramatic case in front of the Courthouse in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Gabriela Bankova is a transgender man. Now he wants to change his name on the identity card, but the court does not allow it.
That’s why Gabriela started a hunger strike yesterday in the Courthouse in Sofia and in front of the building after the closing of the court, until the decision is reviewed, reports BTV.
It is important for her to change her name in order to be identified as a woman, to be able to start working, to have health insurance and to use other rights and services that require documents.

Protesters define the decision as discriminatory
She is still outside the Courthouse this morning, having been there for 24 hours despite the cold overnight temperatures. She is categorical that she is a victim of discrimination and that her human rights are being violated.
„Motives are religious and ‘moral.’ Under moral terms, the existence of trans people is considered to affect the public interest. They think that it is best that we do not exist – that we do not have equal rights with other Bulgarian citizens,“ Gabriela told bTV.
