Social networks Facebook and Instagram crashed yesterday. The problem affected all of the company’s Meta apps, including the Messenger communication app as well as Threads. It is not yet clear what caused the outage.

„It is important to note in this case that there is no evidence that this is a cyberattack. This can easily be verified against traffic that is targeted to a country and to specific applications. There is no evidence that there is enhanced traffic that targets a specific service. It’s a technical problem, probably during the implementation of a new system or when revising one,“ said cyber security expert Deyan Avramov in the „Bulgaria morning“ studio.

Users have also complained about attempts to hack their passwords. According to the cyber expert, the probability of hacking attempts is minimal, and more likely, users were scared by the message about the session being interrupted, but it does not mean that our account is in danger.

„Expiring a session and starting it again and renewing it practically prevents hackers trying to steal this session,“ Avramov explained to Bulgaria ON AIR.

The expert added that there is no information about a data leak and there is no need for users to change their account passwords. However, he recommends keeping our accounts secure by turning on two-factor security on both our mail and social media accounts.
