The Russian Patriarch Kirill delivered a sermon at the liturgy in the Trinity Church in Reutov, which became the occasion for many comments on social networks, because it sounded with notes of criticism of the authorities.

The patriarch touched on the topic of „the loss of self-critical attitude among people in power“, the Russian edition „Izvestia“ reported.

Here’s what he said:

„Sometimes people in power seem to exaggerate their importance, because many obey them, many depend on them and lose a critical attitude towards themselves.

This is the biggest sin of people in power.

When your head spins that too many people obey you, have too much dependence, and in such a position a person begins to work not so much for the position for which he was elected, but for his own personality.“

According to him, in such a position and in this logic of actions, people in power develop many vices.

„No matter what position a man has, he must never forget that he is saved before God not by his position, not by his salary, not by his power, but only by fulfilling God’s law.

And may the Lord help all of us – both secular and spiritual persons – everyone who has any leadership position, to remember Zacchaeus more often and in accordance with the wisdom of this Gospel story to organize our lives, „said Patriarch Kirill in his appeal to the faithful.

Earlier, Cyril said that the Russian Orthodox Church is now living in „the most favorable period“ in its history, but should not get used to it, because „no one knows what awaits us.“
