Here are the most magical places at Christmas in Europe

Cozying up with loved ones at home is important for everyone, but many also like to travel and enjoy the transformation of different cities around the world in December. That’s why we’re giving you ideas on where to celebrate Christmas in Europe.

A number of cities on the Old Continent offer entertainment to raise our Christmas mood – the Belgian city of Bruges offers us the charming Winter Glow light trail, and in the Swiss city of Basel we can enjoy a magical puppet show. It’s all a matter of personal preference

Dog sledding in Finland

While most tourists flock to the city of Rovaniemi (administrative center of Lapland) at Christmas, we suggest heading further north – to Lake Inari. It can be reached by flight from Helsinki, which takes about an hour and a half.

The eponymous town of Inari, located in the southwestern part of the lake, is the epitome of a wonderland. It is dotted with cozy hotels and pleasant restaurants. It’s hard to imagine a more authentic winter vacation than this one, with dog sledding, reindeer feeding and chasing the Northern Lights.

One thing that gets you in the Christmas spirit is a private Northern Lights safari. Sit in the heated sleigh and sip on sparkling wine as you watch the aurora borealis dance above you.

A puppet show in Switzerland

Most European countries are known for their Christmas markets and Switzerland is no exception. You can get into the Christmas spirit in almost any European city, but Basel wins the top spot for bazaars.

The Christmas markets on Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz are a must. There you can find hundreds of vendors selling handmade goods and treats. The two squares are dotted with hundreds of twinkling lights and festive decorations.

The tradition began in 1955 when an advertising campaign posted the wrong phone number for the good old man
One of the things that works to invigorate the Christmas spirit is the special puppet show at the Basler Marionette Theatre. The figures, made of wood and textiles, are a little intimidating for many, but the holiday show is worth seeing.

Light sculptures in Germany

Germany is world famous for its many Christmas markets – in the capital Berlin alone there are more than 60 holiday markets, including the incredibly picturesque WeihnachtsZauber, which is surrounded by landmarks such as the French Church and the Concert Hall.

While strolling through the Christmas markets, you can enjoy the city’s Michelin-starred restaurants, lively nightclubs and modern art museums.

What will get you in the Christmas spirit from mid-November to early January is the Berlin Botanical Garden. It turns into a real wonderland with its light sculptures and illuminations.

A cup of hot chocolate in Belgium

Bruges is the best preserved medieval city in Europe. It has its own charm throughout the year, but during the holidays it becomes especially attractive to tourists.

It’s hard to imagine a more magical place until you walk down the charming cobbled streets. It’s worth admiring the twinkling lights and warming up with a cup of Belgian hot chocolate in a cozy cafe.
