Bkell: Who lives in the smallest city in the USA?
Still, this place hides a curious history
There are hardly many people in the US who would want to visit the smallest city.
You must be thinking that this town has at least 200-300 people.
You are wrong.
The smallest town in the United States, Monovi, Nebraska, has only one resident.
This is Elsie Eiler.
Years ago, there were two residents – Elsie and her husband Rudy.
Rudy died in 2004.
Elsie is currently mayor, librarian, bartender.
Yes, the town has a library and a tavern, frequented by farm workers and travelers in the area.
Monovi has an annual budget of $500.
There is also a church and a tavern, 3 houses, several shops and even a school.
The church was last used for the burial of Elsie’s father in the 1960s.
The town is more than 100 years old. In 1904, a post office was established there and its population was 150, but it decreased over the years.
Where does the name Monovi come from?
The name is from the name of flowers in the local language of the Native Americans here. Many wild flowers grow in the area.
Created along with the development of the railroad in the 1930s, young people began to leave the city for larger cities in the United States, and so the town became deserted.

You can get from Nebraska’s capital Omaha to Monovi by car in about 3 hours and 46 minutes. The distance between the two cities is about 204 miles or 328 kilometers.

Some of the most popular Nebraska attractions include Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium, Omaha’s Old Market District, the Air and Space Force Museum, Chimney Rock National Historic Landmark, Indian Cave State Park, and many more.
