Japan and Russia in dispute over fishing off the Kuril Islands
Japanese fishermen have not yet been able to start fishing off the southern Kuril Islands, as Tokyo has failed to reach an agreement on this issue with Moscow. This was reported by the TASS agency.
Fishing in the area usually starts in mid-September. This year, however, local fishermen can only fish in Japanese waters. The start of the octopus catch, which usually begins in mid-October, remains a serious question.
Earlier, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova indicated that Russia could not reach an agreement on Japanese fishing in Russian territorial waters due to anti-Russian measures introduced by the country of the rising sun.
The dispute between Russia and Japan over the Kuril Islands dates back to the end of World War II. Both countries claim the islands as their domain.
